Unit 3: Using Stories to Resist Dominant Views About My Community

How do the stories told by members of my community work to resist dominant views and construct counter narratives?

In this project students develop resources and content that highlight how Oral Histories help to resist dominant narratives, and construct new understandings about our communities.

This connects to Ethnic Studies because oral histories collect stories that historically have not been valued by those who construct dominant narratives. The stories position elders as knowledge providers, and actively work to preserve marginalized perspectives and examples of solidarity. Oral histories also develop skills around inquiry, and support students to create networks in the community where they live.
