Unit 4: Using Art to Resist Dominant Views About My Community
In what ways does art represent a community’s resistance?

In this unit students continue to explore community cultural wealth and explore how mural art depicts a community’s artistic capital and can also be seen as a form of resistance to dominant narratives. By depicting community history, icons, iconography, and community issues through art, artists are teaching community members, inspiring them to connect the past to the present and future, and to feel pride in their community. Students learned about the muralista movement and the America Tropical mural at la Placita Olvera in downtown Los Angeles. To follow, students research and analyze murals in their own community, highlighting how the murals resists dominant narratives, elevate community cultural wealth, and demonstrate how the community can have agency to honor the community.
